Recently I attended a birthday party with my 3 year old grandson. His little friend’s parents had planned an event I was not familiar with. They had someone bring in a live petting zoo of animals. Among them were sheep. I watched as the children played and petted the animals. I was watching my grandson feed, and pet this one sheep. I watched intently as the sheep tried very hard to reach the food my grandson had placed on the ground. However, because the sheep was tied up it could not reach the food. No matter how hard it tried it still could not reach the food standing on it legs. To my surprise the sheep dropped to its knees as if it were praying. Now I was raised on a farm and I did not remember seeing this before. I continued to watch as the sheep kneeled and stretched it neck and began to eat the food that was just seconds before out of its reach.
I sat there gazing with tear filled eyes thinking about how humble the sheep looked on its knees and how the sheep continued to stay on its knees until all the food was gone! Before I left that day, I asked the young man who was leading the sheep back to the truck, why the sheep had knelt on its knees to eat the food? Well said the young man, the sheep’s legs are so long and its neck is so short, it cannot stretch fare enough to reach food at the ground level. The only way sometimes it can eat is on its knees. WOW! I said and thanked the young man.
As I turned to walk away, I heard a soft voice deep down inside say, when all else fails, get on your knees, there you can be fed by the Holy Spirit as your prayers are answered. That day was an eye-opening experience for me. God showed me through a sheep what we must do to see our prayers answered. On your knees a soft voice said once again, answers can only be found on your knees!!
How many of us have given up, because we refuse to get down on our knees to accomplish what God has called us to do? When the sheep left that day, he was full and happy. However, he had to go to his knees to be filled. Today are you willing to go to your knees to be fed and filled with God’s Spirit? Our work for God can only be accomplished when we are on our knees!
